2. INDUSTRIAL SOFTENER
Alternate Sample
This section highlights the need for water softening, the process of softening by ion exchange and description
of the equipment used for softening.
2.1 Process Description
Raw water is termed as "hard" when it contains dissolved salts of calcium and magnesium. Permanent, non-alkaline or non-carbonate hardness is caused by dissolved chlorides, sulphates or nitrates of calcium and magnesium.
The ion exchange softening process involves converting the calcium and magnesium salts into their corresponding sodium salts.
The softening process may be illustrated by the following reaction:
Ca(HCO3)2 + 2NaR-> CaR2 + 2NaHCO3 |
MgSO4 + 2NaR-> MgR2 + Na2SO4 |
The INDION Industrial Softener comprises a mild
pressure vessel containing ion exchange resin and a set of valves and
