Introduction:
The problem of Arsenic contamination is widespread and it is necessary to remove the arsenic from drinking water. In India arsenic problem was identified as far as 1983 by Dr. K.C. Saha, professor of Dermatology at the school of tropical medicine, Kolkata. The urban people in this area are aware of the problem but tragedy is that in the interior of the country the facts are still largely unknown to those who are most affected. In some rural areas women suffering from arsenic poisoning are either divorced or disliked by their families. Health Hazards: Arsenic mostly
affects grown up people. In the affected areas people are suffering from
skin disease like hyper pigmentation, keratoses and melanomas that
disfigure the skin much like in leprosy. The skin lesion is the last step
and then it turns into skin cancer and leads to death within short
period. Permissible Limit: The WHO guideline for
arsenic in drinking water is 0.05 ppm max. As per latest report of
EPA the desirable level of arsenic is less than 0.01ppm for drinking
water. Product Description: Arsenic Removal
System consists of cylindrical vessel with two media in
series. 2.
Arsenic Selective
Media. Water is pumped at slight pressure using hand pump, Water is then passed through upper Iron removal media (Indion-ISR) which oxidizes dissolved iron into precipitate form and filters it to give iron below 0.3ppm at the outlet. The media also oxidizes arsenic III to V which can be easily adsorbed by arsenic removal media. The filtered water is then passed through Arsenic Selective media for complete removal of arsenic.Media is replaced after exhaustion and expected to produce 180 m3 output. Treated water from the unit has arsenic concentration within acceptable limits as per IS 10500. Flow Diagram: Advantages: Removal of both As(III) and As(V) Treats arsenic level from 25 ppb to 3000 ppb and iron up to 15 ppm Operational over wide pH (6-8) and temperature up to 40.0o C Highly selective for As, even with competing ions like sulfate, silica, Ca, etc Consistently produce water with permissible levels of arsenic |
